Life at MSI-DS
My Apprenticeship and Journey at MSI-DS
MSI-Defence Systems (MSI-DS) provided me with the first of many opportunities following successful completion of my A-Level studies, by employing me onto a 4-year Advanced Technical Apprenticeship. This encompassed a combination of on-and-off-the-job training, alongside workplace secondments in various departments. It was within the Engineering Department that I excelled, and I was soon contributing to programmes ranging from Navigational Plotting Tables to weapon Target Indication consoles, and Test Equipment and Emulators to assist in the production and testing of a range of products. MSI-DS then assigned me a Project Lead role designing and developing Special to Type Test Equipment for customer use to facilitate their own workshops and Integrated Logistics Support activities, on multiple different programmes.
MSI-DS continued to support me by sponsoring my Higher National Diploma in Electronic Engineering, and, as the company’s own apprenticeship scheme drew to an end through the economic downturn; three years later, I gained approval and to continue my studies yet further with the Open University. The company once again investing in our mutual future, leading me to achieve a Bachelor of Engineering Honours Degree in Systems Engineering; a distance learning approach which I undertook around my work. By the completion of my BEng (Hons), I had been promoted twice and was operating as Senior Electronics Engineer, running multi-million-pound weapon programmes, with work ranging from design and team leadership right through to testing and commissioning.
In 2014, the company agreed to assign me the additional role of Apprenticeships Coordinator, where I was instrumental in setting up, maintaining and managing a new company Apprenticeship Scheme in partnership with local colleges and training providers, alongside my primary role within Engineering. The scheme has helped to bring fresh talent into an ageing workforce and provide a number of promising individuals the opportunity to excel and kick-start their careers.
Following the successful development and delivery of our LW14.5k stabilised weapon mount, MSI-DS continued to show faith in my abilities assigning me to the R&D department, who have been instrumental in the development of our Multi-Weapon Station, Electro-Optic Director, A2 Lightweight Gun System, and a new cutting-edge C-UAV application, including the design and specification of an array of components and peripherals, system architectures and concepts, and selection of new technologies.
The wealth of experience that MSI-DS has provided me has been immeasurable, including opportunities to work, travel, and connect with a range of different customers, suppliers and technologies; attend shows and events, and represent the company on a variety of platforms.
Now, I am leading the future product development effort within the business, as Head of R&D. MSI-DS have demonstrated that talent and hard work can be rewarded, and together we can turn dreams to reality for our next generation of products.
