HOURS:            37½ hours per wk – Mon – Thurs 0815 – 1700/ Fri 0815 – 1245

LOCATION:      Norwich, NR7   

About the Role:

We are seeking a innovative and detail-oriented Systems and Software Development Engineer to join our thriving team of engineers within our Research and Development team.

In this role, you will work alongside the Lead Systems and Software Development Engineer to design and implement improvements to system software (front end and back end) to meet specific project requirement sets. You will investigate system capability and usability, and through the application of new technologies and techniques, make refinements to systems and graphical user interfaces.

This position will collaborate with cross-functional teams to define requirements, architect solutions, and ensure the successful delivery of projects. The ideal candidate will need to be a critical thinker, an excellent problem-solver with C++ coding skills.

The main responsibilities will include:

  • Design and development of new software, written in C++ to MISRA compliance.
  • Deploying software on Linux based systems (RedHat and Ubuntu).
  • Administration of Linux operating systems.
  • Design and Implementation of Graphical User Interfaces.
  • Contributing to the systems engineering process within the R&D department.
  • Writing of interface specifications and requirements specifications.
  • Writing of engineering reports.
  • Control of document and software releases.
  • Writing interface software for external hardware and 3rd party software.
  • Maintaining control of software using MSI Git repository.
  • Using system models in MATLAB / Simulink to design and test system improvements.
  • Scientific and mathematical problem solving.

About the Person:

Essential

  • A Degree Level Qualification in Engineering, Mathematics or Physics, or similar subject with a strong mathematical background.
  • Strong C++ coding skills.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • The ability to design and implement software solutions.
  • Strong organisational skills required to work on several tasks simultaneously.
  • The ability to interpret, create and present technical information to audiences with all levels of technical experience.
  • The ability and willingness to understand wider application concepts, and to deliver a holistic design, working as part of a multi-disciplined team, as well as on own initiative.
  • A general willingness to expand knowledge into new areas and to challenge oneself.
  • The ability to use initiative in in exploring new methods and technologies.
  • A flexible approach in terms of both task delivery and time management.
  • A willingness to perform hands-on tasks including integration activities on prototype equipment.
  • A willingness to carry out occasional travel for work, both domestic and international.

Desirable

  • Experience of complex weaponry and naval systems
  • Experience programming with QT.
  • Experience using OpenCV.
  • Knowledge of the MASCOT programming design methodology.
  • Experience scripting in python/bash.
  • Experience programming with CUDA.
  • Training and experience in Systems Engineering

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • Occasional travel to customer sites both in the UK and Internationally, with some unsocial working hours as may be required from time to time.
  • Working within a strict time, budgetary and quality framework.
  • Working within the R&D team as part of an open plan office.
  • Training will be provided to fill any gaps in knowledge
